Krupe (Cleric 2)

Lemony Spice (Changeling 2)

Poppy (Fighter 1)

Voorhis (Cleric 1)

Hirelings: Helusch (Magician 1)

Downtime in the Village

Mechtilde spent the week adorning her armor with the spikes from the spiked armor we recovered last week, granting her enough XP to push her to level 5! Mayfly is gone for the week, but he leaves a scroll of Protection From Demons for Ulf to use in case of emergency.

Mechtilde also buys a bolt of linen with which to disarm the face trap from last week.

Our map of Level 4 after Session 77
(We take this game very seriously)

Into the Abbey

We again continue our exploration of level 4 of Nightwick Abbey, uneventfully journeying through level 3 to reach the 30' by 30' landing on level 4.

We first go to the stone carved faces to the north. Blossom takes two cuttings from the bolt and deftly uses her spear to drape them over the faces, covering them completely.

Liminal proudly steps forward, between the faces, to test if they are disarmed....and he is fine!

Mechtilde then uses rope to secure the linen around the statues and makes our solution more permanent.

This session was such a blunder for us that Warren D., of I Cast Light, gave us an Expert analysis of the adventure over at his blog: I SHOULD HAVE CAST LIGHT: And Other Lessons From the 4th Level of Hell

Downtime in the Village

During the week, Ulf and Liminal go searching for rumors and information on the being known as Plutus, who we failed to meet last week. We learn that someone named Plutus was venerated by the Sword Brothers and opposed by someone known as the Master, though apparently not the one we know. Plutus also has the ability to enrich and impoverish: he can turn copper into gold and gold into copper. Finally, we discover that he may only be harmed by magical weapons.

Three local woodsmen offer up their services to us: Rütsch/Rütschel, Schimko, and Wynant, but no one hires them this week.

Back to Level 4

We return to level 4 of Nightwick Abbey this week in search of treasure after uneventfully passing through level 3.

Arriving on the landing with the baptismal font depicting the boiling alive of the first emperor, we he the strange sound of a settling house that we associate with the dungeon shifting!

A New Nightwick?

Last week, the party explored level four of Nightwick Abbey for the first time. Tired from our delve, we return directly to our homes for rest and do not notice that the world has changed around us.

In the morning, however, we notice that the guards now sport a badge with a white hand on a red field and that they have a more "sinister aspect" to them.

In the village, attached to the building that serves as the local church, is a large cubic steel shrine. We further find out that Lord Eckhard, Lord of Nightwick, has been dead for five years and Sir Albrecht rules in his place.

The final blow to our sanity is when we discover that it is currently the year 1397, not 1392 - we have apparently lost 5 years in the abbey. However, the villagers who we are familiar with have not noticed our disappearance - to them, we departed yesterday to the abbey and returned that night as usual. No one else notices that something is amiss.

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Lemony Spice (Changeling 1)

Hirelings: Niklaus (Fighter 1), Helusch (Magician 1)

Downtime in the Village

Ulf has spent the past two weeks scribing a scroll of Continual Darkness. Liminal Space searches for rumors of magic items of fey origin and discovers a record of a Staff of Dispelling used by a demon during the Siege of Nightwick.

Two new hirelings offer up their services to our party. Niklaus is a Man-at-arms from the Realm with a hook for a hand, and Helusch is a Bogdani magician who offers her services as an apprentice, however she only knows the spell Shield. Ulf hires both of them in his service in exchange for a half share of treasure and xp each.

Down to Level 4

This week, after having done battle to the south last week, we decide to return to the newly-opened level 4 of Nightwick Abbey. We plot a route through level three, entering by the graveyard, and make it to the stairs without issue.

We descend down the spiral staircase and come out upon level 4. We are standing on a 30' x 30' landing. A baptismal fountain faces us, filled with foul black water, on the western wall. Hallways branch off to the north and south and there is a door to the west.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 72 - LEVEL 4

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 72 - 19th of Shocktober, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Cherwe (Cleric 3)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Bluegum Lemony Spice (Changeling 1)

Downtime in the Village

During the two weeks of downtime we had, Blossom decides to search for rumors about the bandits to the south. She discovers that they likely have informants within Nightwick village.

Liminal Space researches Bloatus and ways to kill it. He finds an account from the Siege of Nightwick where a creature called the Piteous Worm is mentioned in conjunction to a man named "Balodis" who can produce a terrible heat that melts any around him.

Verinka recovers the magical sword "Slasher," that we "acquired" from the Great Goblin and had be lost when its previous wielder left the party.

The Changeling formerly known as Bluegum has become star struck by Liminal Space and has changed her name to Lemony Spice in honor her hero.

Liminal Space spends the week gourmandizing and gets terrible indigestion - he will have to rest every 3 turns down in the dungeon to "spew out of both ends."

Nightwick Abbey - Session 71 - The Metaphysics of Phantasmal Force

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 71 - 5th of Shocktober, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Bluegum (Changeling 1)

Hirelings: Gutteral Noises, Henr, Laur, Assman

This session was such a mess that it took two write-ups to cover. Read more about it at I Cast Light!

Downtime in Lychgate

Ulf spends the week searching for rumors about the Hund Prest and learns two things about him. First, during the night he rides across the bishopric, attended by his "hounds," as we learned last week, but by day sleeps in his old lodge in the middle of the Little Heath and second, many have slain him before but he always reappears the next year. A weapon "of particularly supernal puissant holiness" might be able to banish him to the Pit forever. We suspect the the Shard of God, the holy weapon currently held by Blossom, might do the trick.

Mayfly and Liminal Space both go carousing - Mayfly enjoys a night on the down drinking with the Corbies, but Liminal is poisoned by the Brotherhood (of Thieves and Assassins) and starts the session down 5hp.

Several potential hirelings offer up their services to us in Lychgate and we hire two of them.

A woodsmen named Henr offers his services for 10sp per month plus 10sp danger pay if combat should occur on a delve. Ulf hires him.

Laur, a crossbowman recently of Badder's Company who had a falling out with said group, offers up his services for 10sp a month and 10sp danger pay. Liminal hires him.

Into the Abbey

We uneventfully return to Nightwick Village with the Corbies in tow and decide to return to the Gardens of level 2 to continue exploring there. Delving down into the abbey, we quickly pass through level 1 and reach level 2 without incident.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 70 - Solving Problems With the Power of Friendship and Money

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 70 - 28th of September, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Bluegum (Changeling 1)

Hirelings: Gutteral Noises, Ditl (Cleric 2)

Downtime in the Village

Liminal and Blossom have spent the past couple of weeks in search of a cure for Mechtilde. Blackleg to the south holds potential, as do rumors of a saint in the forest to the southeast, but as far as we know, the rebels who bested Lord Eckhard in battle still reside there. We decide instead to go to Lychgate to petition the Bishop for healing.

Hearing of our journey, Lord Eckhard pays the party 100sp to deliver a letter from him to the bishop, sealed with his was seal to prevent prying eyes.

Verinka, Krupe, and Bluegum all go carousing during the week. Verinka winds up hungover, Krupe offends the local church, and Bluegum loses all of her money and barely survives a poisoning attempt.

On the Road to Lychgate

Fall has arrived in the world of Nightwick, the air is damp as we set out at dawn to go north to Lychgate, carrying Mechtilde along with us.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 69 - A Not Nice a Day for Mechtilde

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 69 - 14th of September, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Gerung (Magician 3) LIMINAL SPACE!!! (Changeling 3)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Bluegum (Changeling 1)

Hirelings: Assman, Gutteral Noises

Downtime in the Village

Lord Eckhard, Lord of Nightwick, has returned from his work putting down the peasant rebellion in the south. The battle apparently went poorly, as less than half of his forces returned home with him. We find out in the Medusa's Head, the local tavern, that the rebels are under the leadership of Yim Yimsley and led Lord Eckhard and his troops into a trap in the Great Swamp.

Fortunately, it seems like the rebels have not followed the army back to Nightwick to besiege it.

Unfortunately, strange events have come to Nightwick. Some members of the militia and other notables of Nightwick, all of Realmish descent have going missing. Dog-like barking has been heard off in the distance in connection with the disappearances. The Bogdani villagers have started hanging garlic and wolfsbane on their doors. Ulf follows their lead and spends the week buying up the remaining garlic and wolfsbane in the village, hanging it up outside their house.

Mayfly investigates the disappearances and discovers that everyone who disappeared has ancestors in the region going back to the days of the Sword Brothers and were likely members of the order.

Bluegum buys more armor with her first haul of treasure and Gerung returns to the Bogdani sewing bee late at night with a sackful of coin. An agreement is made and, a few days later, Liminal Space strolls out of the Fog-Bound Forest, reincarnated by Father Winter! As a side effect of the spell, his skin now has the appearance and texture of a Hummel figurine.

Liminal is back, and better than ever!

Mechtilde researches the geometry of Nightwick Abbey, in search of a way to retrieve the lost treasure from last week. She learns two things about the abbey, sending for a book from Lychgate with writings on the matter. First, the abbey "makes space" in an infinite way and, second, it can invent rooms and the "history" of the room is seemingly back written.

Down into the Abbey

For this auspicious session, we decide to return to the realm of the Manimals (one of the levels 2) and mess around down there.

We make it to the entrance landing of the floor uneventfully and are faced with the familiar doors north, east, and south.

Zombies?

We debate opening the door north and just fireballing the zombies behind it, but after Blossom fails to open the door we immediately abandon the plan. The door vibrates in its archway and makes a noise halfway between a scream and a laugh.

This weirds us out so much that we decide to go south, to an area we've never been in before.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 68 - Devilman Diplomacy

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 68 - 7th of September, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Gerung (Magician 3)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Bluegum (Changeling 1)

Downtime in the Village

Gerung returns to the sewing bee from two weeks ago, and inquires about reincarnation services for his recent master, Liminal Space. They claim they can perform such magic, but require 2,000sp to do so. The magician is short on cash at the moment, and so starts the Liminal Reincarnation Fund in the village to raise the money.

Ulf spent the past two weeks learning the spell Phantasmal Forces from the spell book he and Gerung received.

A new player graces our group, prepared to die horribly in Nightwick Abbey! Bluegum the Changeling arrives in the village and quickly joins the party, interested in retrieving the treasure hidden beneath the earth.

We previously "rescued" three cultists from the abbey as well. St. Samson, who we previously cured of being stone, has stuck around in our house and has been lecturing the cultists, admonishing them to return to the Church of Law.

Assman, another former cultist who we took out of the abbey, gives us some information about the Bleeding Baroness and her cult, which he was once a part of. He tells us three bits of information:

  • The Bleeding Baroness is called the Lady by her cult as she is perversely venerated as the founder of the Church of Law within her cult. Assman is also very upfront in telling us that "it's kind of a sex thing."
  • She is served by Berserkers, who we've previously fought, that gain their power by drinking the Baroness's blood.
  • The Bleeding Baroness is incorporeal - she is a type of ghost, though apparently her blood is corporeal enough to drink??? Assman can't explain this part, he was fairly low on the cult hierarchy.

Down Into the Abbey

It's the 7th day of the 7th month and we decide to celebrate such an auspicious day by returning to the gardens on level 2 to fight the Manimals again.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 67 - That Pun Was So Bad It Started Combat

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 67 - 31st of Sextember, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Gerung (Magician 3)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 2)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Hirelings: Assman

Downtime in the Village

A few days after our last delve, a new spellbook is delivered to Ulf and Gerung. They thumb though its pages in awe at some of the powerful magics contained within. Gerung, who just leveled up, learns Protection from Evil from it, and Ulf begins studying Phantasmal Forces.

Blossom studies her new sword, the Shard of God, through a weeks worth of practice. We discover that it is a +3 sword that severs limbs on a roll of 18 or 19 and decapitates on a 20.

Pondering the Orb

This week, we decide to return to the orb room and attempt Lightning Bolt on it, to see if it will be more successful than last week's Fireball.

We return to level 3 through the graveyard entrance. However, before we find the orb, the orb finds us. As we're creeping through an ossuary, we see its light in the distance.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 66 - A Blasphemous Relic

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 66 - 24th of Sextember, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Gerung (Magician 2)

Krupe (Cleric 1)

Hirelings: Assman

Downtime in the Village

Gerung talks to St. Samson about resurrection services, but the saint is not powerful enough to ressurect someone from the dead. The Bishop of Lichgate is the only person in the region powerful enough to do such a thing.

Gerung, however, is interested in resurrecting his old master Liminal Space. However, the deceased was a changeling, so only a powerful druid could bring him back with a Reincarnation spell.

Mayfly spends the last two weeks studying the Lightning spell from our captured spellbook and succeeds!

A new player joins our credulous crew. They bring with them a new cleric, a doomsayer, from Karst - this distant island kingdom where everybody has silly names. This one is named Krupe.

We outfit him with some extra plate armor and a mace to help him survive a little longer.

Mechtilde spends the week carousing, but catches a stomach bug from something she ate. She is at -2 to all rolls this session

New Magical Mentors

Giving up on the ways of the Church, Gerung decides to join Ulf in his journey to meet the Old Gods, scraping together 100gp to pay for the necessary supplies, including wigs and traditional Bogdani dresses.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 65 - It's Simple, We Kill The Bat Man

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 65 - 10th of Sextember, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Gerung (Magician 2)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 2)

Herk (Fighter 1)

Hirelings: Ditl (Cleric 2)

Downtime in the Village

During the week, Ulf secretly approaches the Bogdani woodsmen of the lodge, seeking if they know of a being who could be his magical mentor. He's not much interested in studying under Halfdan, as Mayfly and Gerung do, and wonder if they, perhaps, know of someone, or something, connected to the Old Gods of the Fog-Bound Forest who could teach him.

The woodsmen give Ulf a strange look but agree to help him in this pursuit. They can get him in touch with the right people, but it will take 100gp in donations, bribes, and the purchasing of magical accoutrements (including a traditional bogdani woman's dress and a wig, which Ulf assumes will be his new Magician's uniform).

Luckily, after a few lucrative delves into Nightwick Abbey, Ulf has the cash on hand - barely (Nightwick uses the silver standard rather than gold, so 100gp is a decent sum) and gladly pays the woodsmen. They tell him to return next week when the arrangements are complete.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 64 - All of the Hirelings are Dead

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Gerung (Magician 2)

Hirelings: Grumbletoe (Dwarf 1), Ditl (Cleric 2), Haug, Menczel

Downtime in the Village

During the week, Gerung heads to the Necromancer's tower on the edge of town. He seeks to become Halfdan's student, as is Mayfly. Halfday agrees...on the condition that Gerung provides him with blood from the Bleeding Baroness of Nightwick Abbey as a sort of "entrance exam." When Gerung tries to ask for more details about her, such as where she is in Nightwick Abbey, Halfdan simply shrugs and slams shut the door to his tower to return to his experiments.

Ulf spends the week studying the spellbook we took from the wizard Laurentius (with Mayfly anxiously overseeing the process to ensure he does not damage his prized book) and learns the spell Charm Person!

Mechtilde carouses, gaining 100xp, and we realize that the hireling Ditl has somehow reached 2nd level!

Mechtilde (Fighter 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Herk (Fighter 1)

Hirelings: Grumbletoe (Dwarf 1), Ditl (Cleric 1), Haug

Downtime in the Village

Liminal Space and Mayfly spend the week carousing. Liminal feasted on food, gaining 300xp and a point of constitution. Mayfly studies, but his research blows his mind, and he loses 800xp in the process!

Ulf translates runes on the amulet we discoverd last week - he identifies it as an amulet against scrying. He offers it to Mayfly, as it makes sense to protect the mind of our strongest Magician, but he's worried that it might disrupt his connection to the Master (the golden skull he carries around and sometimes talks to/yells at). We honestly forget about the amulet after that and leave it home for the adventure.

Rumors in the South

We also recieve news from the south! A trickle of knights and crossbowmen, only a few, arrive in Nightwick village from Knightpath in the south. They tell tales of a peasant rebellion against the lord there. Lord Eckhard, Lord of Nightwick, grew outraged at this news and could be heard screaming in rage from the Medusa's Head tavern, despite the usual drunken revelry there. He has gathered together his own knights and the members of the Badder's Boys, a mercanary company he keeps in his employ, to go supress the rebellion in Knightpath.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 62 - All This Treasure, Just Lying Around!

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 62 - 13th of Quintember, 1392

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Verinka (Changeling 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 1)

Hirelings: Menczel, Hanslo, Benisch

Downtime in the Village

Freshly back from Lychgate, the party has money to burn. During downtime, Ulf attempts to make contact with the creature that has been previously detected around the party's house. He goes to bed late one night after a long day of research, only to awaken in his room in the pitch dark. He soon realizes that it is a magical darkness, that a candle is not able to penetrate. He fumbles around in the dark and feels something firm and covered in hair sitting on his bed. Paralyzed by fear, Ulf feels the bed shift as the creature gets up and leaves. After an hour of tense waiting, the magical darkness disipates.

Ulf is determined to make proper contact with the demonic presence and so continues his research into what it could be. He is yet again awoken in the middle of the night, but this time can still see in the dim light - and before him is the face of a shaggy headed beast, with saucer-sized eyes. It seems to resemble the same type of creature as the one in the abbey known as The Manager. Almost before Ulf can process what he sees, the beast disappears.

Mayfly and Blossom spent that time carousing by drinking about town. After a night on the town, Mayfly wakes up to discover that he has acquired a reputation as the "fun time" guy and Blossom wakes up with a (bad) tattoo of her face and her name misspelled.

We realize that, among the party members present, we have only a few hirelings, but the two peasants willing to be hired this week seem pretty worthless, so we pass. (Mechtilde and Liminal Space have most of our hirelings, but they weren't present this week - a lesson in distributing hirelings around the party).

Through the Graveyard - Into the Catacombs

We enter the Abbey through the graveyard entrance straight into the 3rd level. The two angel statues still lay broken into pieces in the entrance chamber.

Stepping over the rubble, we continue on to the eastern hallway. There are four doors here and another passageway in the back. We take the time to listen at the doors, but hear nothing.

No Downtime, Straight to Action

We last left of intrepid adventurers when they had come face to face with the three Anticlerics of the Brotherhood (of Thieves and Assassins) during our negotiations for the Blindfold of St. Candace. This week, we picked up straight away, so no downtime activities this week.

The Anticlerics come sloshing up the grey water in their profane robes and skull masks. The middlest of the three addresses Mayfly.

"So. Mayfly," the figure points at him, "You wish to trade."

"Yes, by the will of Armadeus," the magician replies.

"We hear you have an item that may be of interest to us."

Mayfly raises up the enchanted eye and presents it to them. The movements of its pupil glimmer in the torchlight.

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 3)

Ulf (Magician 3)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 1)

Herk (Fighter 1)

Hirelings: Menczel

Downtime in the Big City

It's been a few weeks since the party reached Lychgate. We've been staying at an inn in the city the past few weeks while preparing for the heist and gathering information.

Ulf spent his time carousing, and reached level 3 in the process! He learns the spell Knock and spent the rest of his time scribing a scroll of Magic Missile.

Liminal Space continues his months long search for a "battle-butler," a request that baffles the common folk of Lychgate and the DM alike. The fighter Fidl answers his advertisement. However, he sports a "C" branded into his flesh - the mark of a coward who once abandoned his post. Seeking no further explination, Liminal immediately spits on him and casts him out. He will have no coward for a Battle-Butler!.

Verinka goes carousing, gaining 500xp, but gets fleeced of her remaining money. The only thing she remembers from her drunken bender is the vague promise that her "investment" will be returned with great gains.

Liminal Space also spent time investigating rumors, specifially seeking to learn more about the Brotherhood (of Theives and Assassins). He learns that their main cache of treasure is stored in a secret room near where they sleep and that they are led by a secret group of anti-bishops who lead the brotherhood in their strange ways.

A new player joins the party as well, rolling up Herk the Fighter!

Nightwick Abbey - Session 59 - Bathhouse Episode

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 59 - 8th of Leftember, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtilde (Fighter 4) Bacifer de Snorley (Frogling 1)

Ulf (Magician 2)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 1)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 2) + The Rest

Downtime in the Village

Several members of the party spent the week carousing after our excellent haul the previous week. Verinka reaches level 3 and learns the spell Animal Friendship. Mechtilde goes out drinking and reaches level 4 (becoming a proper Hero), however, as a side effect, she's very hungover and Bacifer de Snorley takes her place in the party this week.

Blossom seeks out rumors on the Brotherhood (of Thieves and Assassins) and learns that the Bishop  of Lychgate purportedly employs the Brotherhood (of Thieves and Assassins) for his own purposes.

We also discuss an RPG format of having 5 DMs run a game for 1 player. I'll report back once we test it out.

Back on the Road

This week, the party is headed to the bishopric of Lychgate to seek out (and steal) a magical item that the Brotherhood (of Thieves and Assassins) possesses. We depart on our 2 day journey on the morning of the 8th of Leftember. The weather is muggy and grey and the road is incredibly muddy.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 58 - Pudding!

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 58 - 1st of Leftember, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 5)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtilde (Fighter 3)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 3)

Verinka (Changeling 2)

Ulf (Magician 2)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 2), Grumbletoe (Dwarf 1), Ditl (Cleric 1)

Downtime in the Village

Over the week, the party went carousing with the recently acquired treasure. Verinka goes drinking, gaining 200xp. Ulf feasts, gaining 100xp, but gaining terrible indigestion, forced to rest every 3rd turn this session. Liminal also feasts, gaining 800xp, but angers a passing noble, Sir Sander Hornpike, in the process. Sir Hornpike has now sworn to hunt Liminal down and hang him from the highest tree in teh bishopric.

This week, we decide to go to level 2 in search of the giant ruby we learned about from the cultist Assman. We stock up on flasks of oil to aid us. A single woodsman, Hanslo, also offers up his services to the party and Ulf hires him on the spot.

In Search of a Pudding

We make it to level 2 without incident. Our plan is to start where we fought the cultists who told us about the ruby guarded by the giant blood pudding. Grumbletoe, our dwarf scout, (who sounds like Scruffy the Janitor) hears nothing at the door to their room.

We open the door to reveal several cultists with sharp swords.

Liminal turns to the dwarf and says, "Grumbletoe, you're not being reprimanded, but you can do better."

"I think this is very clearly a case of man against man and God against all," the dwarf replies.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 57

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 57 - 25th of Youngers, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Verinka (Changeling 2)

Ulf (Magician 1)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 1)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Mikusch, Bero

Downtime in the Village

Ulf researches the strange happenings around the party's house and comes to the conclusion that they are the result of a demonic, rather than ghostly presence - there must be an invisible creature around. Mayfly studies a captured spellbook to learn Mirror Image and he buys 3 maces and 3 spears for the party to use.

Today, we plan to return to level three and fight the undead there, who seem to be resistant to blades, so the maces might come in use. We know there's treasure in the room with the bat-helmed Meister, but we have to defeat it first.

Into the Abbey

As we descend into the abbey, Cherwe discovers that the door into the 1st floor landing is stuck. Mikusch and Cherwe force it open and find two goatman on the other side of the door, hiding behind the pillars. Several more come out from the shadows. We filter down the ladder as Franz and Cherwe enter melee. They are both hit badly as they try to make space in the melee for the rest of us to come down.

Mikusch and Liminal are both wounded as well. Cherwe is hit again. We've taken some bad hits for the first room of the dungeon and this isn't boding well for the rest of the delve, especially without our best fighter, Mechtilde.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 56 - Deja Vu

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 56 - 18th of Youngers, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtilde (Fighter 3)

Verinka (Changeling 2)

Ulf (Magician 1)

Franz Croakenbell (Frogling 1)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Fredman (Fighter 1), Grumbletoe (Dwarf 1)

Downtime in the Village

For the second week in a row, a new joiner joins! A Frogling by the name of Franz Croakenbell (played by my actual brother) seeks to delve into the horrors of Nightwick with us! Mechtilde put out an ad, seeking to hire a dwarf to act as a scout for the party. One dwarf, named Grumbletoe, responds, and she agrees to pay him handsomely for his services. Ulf manages to buy a crossbow from a traveling merchant to give him a way to be useful once he has cast his only spell.

Ulf also spends the week researching arcane secrets from what he has learned in the abbey, studying the Pits of Hell and its denizens. Since he has begun this study, however, strange happenings have occurred in the house where much of the party dwells. Doors have been opening and shutting of their own accord, people have claimed to bump into large objects not visible to the eye, and strange, glowing eyes have been seen in the windows at night. Normal magician stuff, nothing to worry about.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 55 - Don't Go In Without a Plan

Previously in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 55 - 11th of Youngers, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 3)

Mechtilde (Fighter 3)

Ulf (Magician 1)

Duka (Fighter 1)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Elger, Fredman (Fighter 1), Guttural Noises

Downtime in the Village

Over the week, we've had a new player join the ranks of Nightwick! He rolled up Duka, a fighter from the island kingdom of Kars, a distant land where everybody has dumb names. While he was rolling up Duka, the rest of us discussed whether or not Froglings have souls and why would a chamber of commerce use a Dave & Busters business model. This week, we decide to forgo a trip to Lichgate to show Duka a proper Nightwick dungeon delve - we're going to level 2 to find our lost magic sword, Dhinron, and a giant ruby if we have time to spare.

Down Into The Abbey

Leaving the village, we take our well-worn path through the woods to the remains of the abbey, where two old towers still stick out above the ground. We descend through the western tower into level 1 and begin to make our way to the stairs down. Not far into level 1, we cross a room to find a previously open door stuck closed.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 54

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 54 - 27th of Elders, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtilde (Fighter 3)

Verinka (Changeling 2)

Ulf (Magician 1)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Elger, Fredman (Fighter 1)

Downtime in the Village

Over the week, Mayfly made a silver cube reliquary with noble Sotar's teeth, to honor the fallen cleric. Liminal Space sells the cursed sword to Halfdan the Necromancer for 250sp, who is interested in it solely as an artiface from the cursed abbey. Blossom continues to gather information on the Blindfold of St. Candace of the Night, discovering that it is probably held in the sewers of the old city section of Lichgate.

Down in the Abbey

Last week, we made a deal with the Manimals for them to procure some plants from the underground garden of the abbey. We arrive at level 2, unsure if we'll find the plants or a trap there. At the food of the stairs we find....

Goats in the OSR (GoatSR)

I like goats. This is a well documented fact. I like table-top role playing games, as documented by the existence of this blog. Naturally, I'm going to combine the two.

Back in the summer of 2021, I ran some Knave for my friends. As I was preparing for the first session, what did my eye spy? Goats! For only 10 copper pieces, an aspiring adventurer could purchase a goat. I was intrigued.  Of course the players would have to obtain goats to ferry supplies to and from the dungeon. This led me into an hours long research delve into the viability of pack goats.

The short of it: yes, people use goats to haul supplies! A well-conditioned goat can haul between 40 to 60 pounds of equipment. Naturally, I've wanted to include goats as pack animals in every game I've ran since. And I will.

This got me thinking about goats in RPGs and I started to notice when games included them and so I've compiled a list of various old-school and OSR games (and whatever else I have on my shelves) and what they have to say about goats, for your reference and mine. This isn't meant to be comprehensive, but I might come back and update it as I look through other systems.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 53 - Don't Thrown Your Only Torch

Previously, on the battlefield...

Session 53 - 20th of Elders, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Sotar (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtild (Fighter 3)

Verinka (Changeling 2)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Elger, Guttural, Bero

Downtime in the Village

This week we took Halfdan's threats to heart and prepared to return to level 2 of Nightwick in search of its famed underground gardens. Mayfly spends the week interrogated his golden skull which contains the soul of the Master, creator of the gardens. The Master suggests we check the area where we previously fought plant-like monsters.

Liminal Space spent the week practicing with the Butcher's cleaver (which we retrieved two weeks ago) until Mayfly studied it and pointed out that the axe spreads the wasting disease Bishop's Evil whenever it is swung. Luckily, Liminal had been practicing outdoors thus far and wasn't harmed, but bringing the weapon into the dungeon seems like a non-starter for now. We briefly consider having a Sotar consecrate it or trying to sell it to Halfdan.

Mechtilde spent the week feasting (per the carousing rules) and came away with a tapeworm! She'll be at -1 CON for at least a month.

As we prepare to go into the dungeon, we give some of our spare armor to the hirelings and Blossom buys a spear for Bero.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 52 - CHAINMAIL

Previously, in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 52 - 13th of Elders, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Cherwe (Cleric 4)

Sotar (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtild (Fighter 3)

Yevegniy the Coward (Cleric 2)

vs

The Hunting Knight (Played by Huth - Nightwick Abbey's own illustrator)

Preparing for Battle

There are no downtime activities this week as we prepare for battle. Lord Eckhard of Nightwick has given each of us a palfrey (riding horse) to use and has offered Mechtild a destrier (a warhorse) if she would like to be mounted for battle. The battle, we've decided, will be fought out using original Chainmail rules. Most of us have never played with it before, so we thought it would be a neat experience, to take things back to the start of our hobby.

A company of 60 knights led by Sir Albrecht of Lychgate and Sir Baltzer the Bold arrived in Nightwick to ask Lord Eckhard for troops to aid the Bishop. Delighted to find the mercenaries already preparing for battle, they offer to join us agains the White Lady.

As we parade out of Nightwick Village, our forces stand at:

  • The Corbies - led by Sir. Guant of Fatstaff, a band of 100 medium cavalry clad in gold skull helmets
  • The Brown Company - led by Frock, a group of 200 light infantry.
  • The Company of the Goose - led by St. Gunther the Goose. 200 crossbowmen serve the Goose.
  • The Middle Sons - a company of 200 heavy infantry led by Adolphus the Lesser.
  • The Crossbowmen of Nightwick (Badder's Boys) - 20 crossbowmen total
  • The Knights of Lychgate - 60 heavy cavalry led by Sir Albrecht and Sir Baltzer

Marching Orders

The weather is even nice today, clearly fate is on our side. We set off with the Knights of Lychgate and the Corbies in the vanguard, the Brown Company and Middle Sons in the main, and the Gooses and Badder's Boys in the rear as we head to the village of Vollage, where the White Lady's troops have lay siege to the towns remaining inhabitants.

We notice nothing untoward until noon along the road to Vollage, however, around midday, we notice that the autumnal forest of the Witchwood appears to have advanced south right up to the road.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 51 - Picking Up After Ourselves

Previously in Nightwick Abbey...

Session 51 - 6th of Elders, 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Mayfly (Magician 4)

Sotar (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Mechtild (Fighter 3)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Andre (Fighter 1), Heyno, Elger, Gutteral

Downtime in the Village

Blossom uses the week to search for rumors of ways to see in the dark. Through her various contacts, she finds out that the Blindfold of St. Candace of the Night, purported to bestow its wearer the ability to see in the dark, is in the hands of the Brotherhood of Thieves and Assassins. Where, exactly, they are holding it is still unknown to Blossom, but the expert rogue will be able to find that out in due time. Taking it from an assassin's guild may be foolhardy, but maybe they will want to strike a deal for her to obtain it.

The party clerics spend the week declaring their saintly devotion - a traditional practice for warring holy men that has been neglected in Nightwick until now. They each pick one saint to express their devotion to and, in turn, they are each blessed with holy knowledge. (Player's Note: this is a bit of extra role-playing potential, but this also gives each cleric a bonus 1st level spell that they always have memorized. Through saintly devotion, they even have the potential to learn spells not on the cleric spell list!)

Sotar devotes himself to The Lady, the first to hear from the God of Law and who founded the Church by sharing the God of Law's teachings.

Yevgeniy devotes himself to St. Gax the Lawgiver, who wrote down The Lady's teachings before her death and then added some bits to make it more "comprehensible, complete, and followable," according to him.

Cherwe devotes herself to St. Richard the Prior, the patron saint of truth tellers who died by immolation.

Sotar is interested in St. Gunther, the Goose (who leads the Company of the Goose), but must first decide if he aligns with the Eastern Church and then establish an enclave to him.

Liminal Space went carousing, but it went quite poorly. He got into a one-sided knife fight where he got badly stabbed (starting the week's session down 8hp - over half of his total). On the morning of our delve into Nightwick, he shows up, badly bandaged and still bleeding a little bit, but insisting that he is fine.

Mayfly studied the recently captured spellbook and learned Web from it.

Nightwick Abbey - Session 50!!!! - Everything is Fine. Nothing is Ruined.

Previously, in the world of Nightwick...

Art by Don Greer

Session 50 - 30th of Primes 1392

This week's adventurers:

Blossom (Rogue 4)

Sotar (Cleric 4)

Liminal Space (Changeling 3)

Yevgeniy the Coward (Cleric 2)

Mechtild (Fighter 3)

Hirelings: Gerung Floating Disk (MU 1), Ticze (Changeling 1), Ditl (Cleric 1), Andre (Fighter 1), Heyno

Downtime in the Village

Over the week, the party, with our 700 mercenaries in tow, uneventfully make it back to Nightwick Village. We plan to march out to meet the White Lady in two weeks (when all of the players will be available to play) and so this week, we decide to return to Nightwick Abbey. A number of potential hirelings come up to us, offering to be hired, as we prepare for our delve. Our applicants are:

  • A single member of the Corbies (one of the merc companies we hired last week), Andre, offers to delve into the dungeon with us in exchange for a half share of treasure (and xp). He brings with him chainmail, a helmet and hounskull, a shield, a sword and a lance.
  • Nyze, a peasant girl from the village, offers to serve as a linkperson (basically a torchbearer) for 5sp/month. She's missing her right arm.
  • Bero, a member of the woodsman's lodge, offers to fight with us armed with a bow and axe. (1gp/month with 5sp danger pay). He is hobbled and can only move as fast as a man in plate.
  • A tongue-less bandit whose name we can't quite make out. He's otherwise well armed. We assume he takes the standard fare, 10sp/month.

Mechtild hires the bandit (swiftly nicknamed "Gutteral,") swearing she can fix him. Sotar hires Andre and Blossom hires Bero to increase the party's fighting power. We decide to enter Nightwick Abbey by the side entrance through the graveyard, where the party hasn't been since session 4, which will take us straight to level 3.

Arriving in Frogguts

The party has just arrived at Frogguts, a town that seems to have based its entire identity on hating Froglings. Unlike Knightpath and Nightwick, the buildings of Frogguts are packed in tightly together in three large blocks. As we walk down the street towards the Frog Legs Inn, we notice that we don't see any children in town. Liminal Space, our most charismatic party member, talks to one of the villagers we pass.

"Hello peasant, I see that you have no children."

Said peasant goes into her house silently and continues to warily watch the party through a window. Once we make it to the inn, we note that the population seems to be all Realmish people with none of the local Bogdonis present.

Downtime in the Village

Last week, the gang (sans Sotar) acquired a new house! There were people in the basements or dog breeders? Now we have a hangout spot for the crew and hopefully a safer place to store party treasure. The White Lady, one of the old gods of the land, is still harassing the roads to the north and so we decide brave the 3 day journey to Blackleg in the south to hire some mercenaries to go deal with her. Blossom scouts to try to get a handle on what forces the White Lady brings with her and discovers that she seems to have a horde of pigmen as her army with elves serving as officers, though Blossom is unable to determine the size of her forces.

Downtime in the Village

Happy New Year from the Dreadful Wonderful World of Nightwick Abbey!!! As the calendar flips over in the Dark Country, news of trouble strikes the village. A group of Frogling traders comes, begging for protection with the village walls. The White Lady has been terrorizing the roads to the north with her army of elves and pig-men. Some wonder if the presence of Paladin Lord Fitzgerald in Lychgate has anything to do with her arrival.

The party briefly considers going north to meet the Lady before quickly realizing the great dangers that may pose. The familiar threats of Nightwick Abbey seem downright hospitable in comparison. We decide to go instead to level 2 to continue looting and scouting. Without Mayfly present to control the Manimals, we go to the eastern portion of Level 2 where the Manimals don't dwell.

Downtime in the Village

We're back! Storms have come to Nighwick the past week. Heavy rains and lightning have kept most people indoors and the strange contraption on Halfdan the Black's tower has been the target of most of the lightning strikes. With the storms, a new adventurer comes to join our crew. Fribblegupp the Frogling has heard of the expeditions into Nightwick and is eager to join in on the festivities (we had a new player join us and there's still space for another new player). Additionally, rumors of a strange woman claiming to be Halfdan's daughter appearing in the village run amok.

Downtime in the Village

We're back! After two weeks off, we're ready to cause some more havoc in the world of Nightwick Abbey (and there's a spot open to join us). Liminal blew all of him money of a feast, even going into debt, but came out of it enriched and inspired by the fine foods (he gained 3 max HP from his downtime activity). Verinka spent the week getting rumors and learned that the road to Lychgate is dangerous, often frequented by pigmen and elves.

Fortunately, we're heading to Lychgate today! The Lady of Nightwick has fallen pregnant immediately after giving birth to a son. Rumor is, among the midwives and clergy, is that the child is a devilman or changeling. We are going up to Lychgate today to petition the Prince-Bishop for help, as there are no Clerics in Nightwick village strong enough to help the Lady. As we pack up and arrange ourselves for the journey, Sotar remembers he has a hireling - the peasant Gele and so brings her along.

Dungeon23 - Week 3 - The Sun King's Palace

I continue to the northern part of the old fort. Here, we start a larger complex - the remains of the old palace. The design is starting to come together for me. The palace resembles more of a traditional dungeon. Here's my default layout for each level - how the four weeks relate to each other spatially:

W4 | W3

W2 | W1

I've been using this article on empty rooms, from I Cast Light, to give my empty rooms some more flavor as well as Tricks, Empty Rooms, and Basic Trap Design for additional inspiration and help with furniture and traps. I'm pretty happy with this week's designs compared to last week. The buildings feel more connected and 'alive' - every room had a past function as well as a present function by its new inhabitants. This provides multiple angles for the PCs to interact with each room. This week, there's a lot of Corvold and Goblin areas. I might reconsider their placements, as there are several rooms where they are adjacent to one another (and I already like the idea of them being warring factions of the dungeon). I might move the Goblins from 1-19 to 1-21. I'm also not sure how I feel about 1-22 being controlled by the Corvolds, but I like my use for the room. Honestly, there's no reason to change it until I actually run it with some friends, but these are the things I'm thinking typing it up.

Downtime in the Village

Sotar was absent from the previous delve down into Nightwick Abbey, but at the Medusa's Head tavern, he was regaled with the tale of the grisly death of Grolmes, Mayfly's longtime faithful hired help. Alas, his magic sword Dhinron, a gift from Father Winter, was left behind in the abbey along with his corpse. Sotar proposes returning to level 2 in an attempt to retrieve the powerful sword (and Grolmes's body).
