Downtime in the Village
We hire two new hirelings to make up for the deceased and make plans to return to level 4 this week, ready to explore the new layout of the floor after shifting it so much last time.
We make it safely down to level 4...
Into the Abbey
...and no further.
As we enter the landing room, waiting for us at the bottom of the stairs are a group of undead in black armor who spit blood out of their helmets.
Three of our frontliners are hit by the blood and blinded and we enter battle.
There's seven of them in two groups.
It's Like Double Dare 2000 But With Blood For Slime
Thekla casts web, ensnaring half of them.
We are ineffective in combat and more of us are blinded.
Fearing total party wipeout, Yevgeney Turns Undead, forcing the mobilized undead to flee!
We hear a gross fleshy grinding around us as the abbey shifts and the remaining undead are unable to flee, caught in the web, and we strike them down as they struggle.
We bind wounds and continue on.
A Trick Up His Sleeve
South of us are the effects of the Continual Darkness darkness spell from a few weeks back - we've forgotten to get a scroll of Continual Light or Dispel.
Mayfly speaks to his familiar in his robe and commands it to remove the darkness, which it does readily.
We go through the passage to a secret door to a 30' by 20' chamber that once held the undead sorcerers who cast the darkness spell.
We rest a turn in the secret room and find a star chart there, which contains a depiction of the current night's sky under the sign of the scitalis, the Serpent.
Revelation 9:7-11 (KJV)
To the door east, we hear the whirling of a great many number of insects, though not the sound of wings.
Yevgeney forces open the door to reveal a columnated 30' by 50' room. The room is full of small, 2", insects flying around.
Thekla immediately casts Fireball, engulfing the lot of them in the explosion.
She picks up one of the dead insects and sees that it has a small face and beard of a person.
We search the room, but find nothing.
Decisions...Decisions...
There are doors north, south, and east of here. We don't hear anything at any of the doors.
We decide to start exploring with what we assume is still map north, the door to our left.
Hartnid forces open the door to reveal a 10' by 10' room with another door at the end.
We decide to check out the other doors in the big room before continuing on from here.
Hartnid forces open the map south, but not without causing a spray of rancid purple slime to spray out over our front two ranks.
A Harmless Room In Nightwick Is One Where The Trap Is Obvious
He reveals a 30' by 30' room with two statues. Each statue has three eagle heads coming out of the body of a man.
The figures are looking at a spot in the middle of the room.
Mayfly throws a coin through their eyeline and a bright blue light emits from the pair and strike the coin.
It continues its arc and lands on the floor across the room and shatters.
We debate using sacks or Wall of Fog to block the statues' sightlines, but head for the third door before continuing.
We're Getting The Hang Of This Secret Room Thing
Hartnid again forces open the east door, though again not without striking the crowbar a little too hard into the door and shooting out slime onto our front ranks - again.
This eastern room is 60' wide, extending to our right, and 30' deep with several columns.
We search the room and Hartnid discovers a carving of St. Gax on one of the columns, holding a key.
Liminal immediately presses the key and a door on the wall behind us quickly slides up, revealing three undead figures dressed in ancient looking black and dusty togas wearing copper circlets.
Defeated With The Power Of Friendship And Overwhelming Violence...
They were seated on thrones, but quickly rise as they see us.
Liminal shoots arrow, bounces off the figure as if it were made of steel.
Ulf and Mayfly cast Lightning Bolt each, destroying the three figures.
As we approach their secret room, we see a large number of treasures with their bodies.
...Twice!
While we're checking for traps, the air grows heavy and misty and blood starts to pour out of Mayfly's and Liminal's faces.
Mayfly and Ulf again double cast Lightning Bolt and blast the blood creatures who had snuck up on us.
99% Of Dungeon Delvers Quit One Room Before Striking It Big
The mummy's treasure (for that is where they were) includes:
- 2,000 silver in coins lying scattered on the ground
- 3 gold thrones (1,000sp each - 3,000sp total)
- 4 aquamarine cabochons (250sp each - 1,000sp total)
- A basket of blocks of incense (2,000sp)
- A fine tapestry (5,000sp)
We load up all the treasure onto Mayfly's floating disk and rush to leave the abbey.
Thunder Road
On level 3, we're caught unaware by a group of the breaking wheels - undead strapped to breaking wheels who roll around the floor.
Liminal, Mayfly, and Blossom are all run over by them (four undead in total).
Ulf uses his last Lightning Bolt to blow up two of them and Mayfly casts Web on another.
Back To The Village
We kill the last one with our weapons and continue out of the abbey, leaving that last one behind us enwebbed still.
After making it out of the dungeon and back to Nightwick Village, we each get 1,719xp!
We hauled back 13,000sp in total treasure for 1444sp, 4cp each.
