Session 134 - 6th of November 1399

This week's adventurers:

Mayfly (Magician 6)

Ulf (Magician 6)

Thekla (Magician 5)

Liminal Space (Changeling 5)

Yevgeny the Coward (Cleric 5)

Poppy (Fighter 5)

Pataki (Rogue 5)

Felix (Dwarf 4)

Hirelings: Hartnid (Rogue 3), Baldekinus, Elger

Downtime in the Village

Poppy goes on a heavy night of drinking during the week. In her drunken stupor, she finds herself at a Bogdani hut somewhere in the Fog-Bound forest outside of town.

She stumbles inside where three old women tell her future (she knows the result of her next 3 d20 rolls).

Mayfly finishes his studies to learn the spell Haste!

Felix adorns his plate armor with the names found on the Kings' List on level 4. Surely this won't have some repercussions later.

Into the Abbey

We delve back down to level 4 this week, continuing our exploration and search for level 5.

We journey south, then east towards unexplored sections of the abbey.

At this point, the northeast and south eastern corner of the level are the biggest blind spots on our map.

We come into a large room, 100' by 30', on the way.

A large, steaming, pool of water sits in the middle.

Old Stomping Grounds

We've been here dozens of times, in this room the Fly-men quench their swords in the pool.

Tonight, however, there are no fly-men here.

Six figures stand in the room, to the side of the pool.

One large figure stands in the center of the others.

It is naked except for a number of straps around its body, holding a large, bronze head on its bare shoulders.

Can't Tell If This Is A Sex Thing Or Not...

Five robed figures kneel around it.

The creature makes a horrible, metallic yell as we enter the room...

...and in a flurry of missiles and a Lightning Bolt, they all go down.

The creatures are all undead, what we call the Cadaverites, and are unlikely to hold treasure.

...Like, That's Got To Be A Sex Thing, Right?

Mayfly does take the bronze head off the leader for later study.

There's a door at the opposite end of the room, heading south, that we haven't been through, so we decide to cut south in our exploration.

Pataki forces it open to reveal a 30' by 90' room.

There are two doors to our left (east) and right (west).

Three large columns stand in the center of the room.

How Old Is This Dungeon?

The walls are in an ancient style, far older than the abbey, like the black city walls of ancient Acheron (think fake Babylon meets fake Rome), Mayfly notes, though he doesn't know if they are authentically old or a facsimile.

A motif of bull-headed figures decorates the walls.

We decide to check the doors in a clockwise fashion.

The first one leads to a short 30' corridor north that then turns back east.

The second doorway leads to a 30' corridor east that then turns left (north)

The third doorway leads to a stairway down!!!

Level 5!

We've found level 5!

Mists cloud the stairway, preventing our descent.

Miranda misplaced her level 5 map, we can't play it yet :(

Nevermind, More Level 4

We go down the second corridor instead.

It turns north with a door on the right-hand wall.

Hartnid opens the door to reveal a 40' by 40' room decorated with 4 large statues of bull-headed men holding up the ceiling.

"Water" Features

Surrounding each statue is a large basin full of steaming blood.

On the right-hand wall (south) and left-hand wall (north) are double doors and across from us (east) is a regular door.

Guarding What, Exactly?

We go through the door south to reveal a room 20' deep and 80' wide.

Two doorways open up to a howling void on the walls across from us.

The room is columnated and 7 flymen stand in the room.

They claim to be guarding the room, and urge us to leave.

So Anyway I Start Blasting

We turn around and go north, through the other double doors, into a plus-shaped room.

Mayfly magically locks the guards into their room behind us as we go.

In the new room, seven armored figures rise up and arm their weapons.

They're the hollow suits of armor we call the Iron Squires.

Thekla casts Fireball, killing three.

One of the armored undead spits hot blood at Poppy, temporarily blinding her.

Ulf follows up with a Lightning Bolt, killing the remaining squires.

The Reason For The Season (Treasure)

The atmosphere of the room feels heavy and warm and there's an altar at the far end.

It is made of a polished black stone and we can see a seam, like a chest.

Hartnid and Pataki search for traps and Hartnid thinks he's found one

It's some sort of sprayer.

That's One Way To Disarm A Trap

He fails to disarm it and a gas sprays out, right on their two faces

It's a sleeping gas, they'll be out for the next hour.

Thankfully, it wasn't anything more lethal.

Returns On Investment

Mayfly casts Knock to open the chest and inside we find:

  • A star ruby
  • A lotta coins
  • Silver bars
  • A diadem in Acherontic style beset with sparkling garnets

Mayfly immediately puts on the diadem, hoping for great powers or demonic possession, but nothing happens.

It's just a boring old extremely valuable diadem.

He doesn't have Floating Disk prepared, however, so getting the treasure out may be tricky.

Business Solutions For The Medieval Age

We grab the helmets of the defeated suits of armor, seal them with melted wax, and stuff them full of coins.

We pick up our sleeping comrades and rush out of the dungeon, Mayfly casting Haste to help us.

We make it out safely, Hartnid and Pataki eventually waking up once we're back in town.

We recovered 3,000 silver coins and 150 gold coins.

The silver bars are worth 3,000sp, the ruby 1,500sp, and the diadem also 1,500sp.

In total, we brought back 10,500sp worth of treasure, which divides into 1,500 for each of us.

We each receive 2,553xp as well, and Poppy levels up!

Here's the map of our exploration tonight:
